From sourthern Germany. Three varieties-Giant, Standard and Miniature-the Standard dating back to fifteeth century. Schnauzer means stout. The Miniature variety is thought to have been created by crossing with Affenpinscher.

Character robust, good with children, playful, yet a fine guard.
Exercise likes plenty. Will follow horses. Useful obedience dog.
Grooming use wire brush daily. Comb whiskers. Coat needs stripping twice a year.
Feeding 1/2 - 3/4 can (400g size) of a branded meaty product, with kibbles added in equal parts by volume.
Temperament tendencies Fearless and all knowing. Reliable and intelligent. Larger dogs used by the army during war time as message carriers. Affectionate, obedient and good guards.
